I made these little guys for the Christmas gift baskets that my mom was gifting to friends a few years back. One of the families had a little boy (my sort of nephew-in-law now since I married his dad’s cousin later), who loved the snowman.
The How for Santa
Santa’s body was crocheted from red yard, just like a ball, except before the other end was complete, I started increasing again in beige for the head. It’s a good idea to either slip stitch at the end of the last red row and chain stitch up to the first beige row so there is no jog, or if you are lazy, you can switch them on what will be the front and hidden by the beard. The hands were just small balls sewed on, though I like leaving them unfinished and just sewing or crocheting the ends to the body so they feel sturdier. The hat is conical with the last couple of rows in fuzzy white, and there is also a tiny ball of fuzzy white yarn on the top of the head. It really doesn’t matter what you do there as long as it’s sort of spherical. The nose is also beige and the beard is a flat crochet in fuzzy white. The eyes are black/brown beads sewn on with black yarn – it’s easier to do those before the head is finished.
The How for Snowman
The snowman is mostly white with a larger body and smaller head and small balls for the hands. The nose is a narrow cylinder of red (because I didn’t have orange) something like 3-4 stitches in circumference. I am surprised the hat turned out as well as it did because I was totally winging it. I started expanding a bit more rapidly than for a sphere, then straight cylinder, and the brim has to be on the outer side of the stitch so that is folds out like that. The scarf was just a quickie because I was in a hurry to finish this toy, but I would have made more tassels if I had to do it again. It can also be knitted in garter stitch for uniformity. The eyes were the same as Santa’s – black/brown beads with black yarn.
