I made this when I first found out I was pregnant, and even though I was only about a month or two into it, I had a strong feeling it would be a boy. And so I started knitting in blues. Also, you can dress a girl in blue, but not a boy in pink, so blue was sort of universal. But I never doubted that I would have a little boy.
This project was one of the only times I ever followed a pattern exactly. I loved how seamless it was and will probably use the same top down tactic again in the future.
Thankfully, this didn’t take long to make because I only used it once or twice. First of all, my son was not a small baby and he outgrew it within months. Secondly, since he was my first, I had no idea what kids were like and never anticipated how uncomfortable and impractical this style (no buttons, short sleeves, and nothing to hold on to on the bottom) would be. It must be designed for little girls, who are dressed in more frilly clothes for outings. It was always rolling up in the back (not comfy for a baby who sleeps most of the time) and the short sleeves didn’t make it warm (my son’s first few months were in late fall and through winter). Looks perfect for a girl who is born in spring or for slightly older babies (if made in a larger size) though!
