Engineer Christmas Ornaments

Last year, I saw some Christmas ornaments about engineers and loved what they said. I didn’t love, however, the style of the ornaments (they were metal and flat, while I prefer round) or the price. So I decided to make my own with the same sayings but in my own style.

The first one was simpler, with just the “Engineers are all about the details” phrase and some rulers to represent the details. I have a lot of scrapbooking letters, so I decided to use some for this ornament so that it would be neater than what I would write. I also found some ruler stickers, but they were quite stiff and don’t really stick well on the rounder part of the ornament. The squished type is better, but the sides are still rounded. I used toy filling for the inside of the ornament to give it a background and a snow-like texture.

The second ornament was a bit more involved. I couldn’t use sticky letters because the saying was so long, so I thought about printing it. Regular paper would be too boring, but graph paper felt fitting for an engineering design. But how would I glue it on that would look good? It didn’t take long to remember that I had an unopened bottle of Mod Podge in my crafting drawer that I have been meaning to use but never got around to. Decoupage was perfect for this project!

I cut the phrase out in a hexagonal shape so that it would mostly cover the round face of the ornament and then a bunch of rectangular pieces to glue around all the sides. Then I used Mod Podge to decoupage the paper pieces onto the ornament, making sure all surfaces were covered, including the top cover, and followed with another coat on top of everything. Left it to dry and voila – it was perfect!

I took both of the ornaments to work to decorate my desk during the holiday season and then brought them home for our tree when I went on vacation. And repeated again this year.
